Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, located in Penywaun, has been significantly enhanced through a £12.1 million investment aimed at expanding its capacity and improving facilities for both students and the community. This funding is part of the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme and increased the school’s Welsh Medium places by 187.
The project included the demolition of the existing caretaker’s house and the removal of temporary classrooms, paving the way for a new eight-classroom block that feature modern drama and music facilities, as well as community rooms accessible to the public. Additionally, the development encompasses a new school reception area, a sports hall, a fitness suite, a dance studio, changing facilities, and a 45-space parking area complete with cycle storage.
The new facilities were designed to achieve an EPC ‘A’ rating and BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification. The construction incorporated low-carbon technologies and eco-friendly materials to meet rigorous environmental standards, with assessments on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) conducted by our team, who also served as BREEAM consultants.
