MTVH stands for Major Trauma Vascular Hybrid Theatres. This was a major new redevelopment project for University of Wales, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
This was a complicated project involving a mix of new build and refurbishment that needed tying into the existing building services. The project also had stringent energy and sustainability targets set by NHS Wales. This included onerous energy and zero carbon targets, waste reduction targets and embodied carbon targets. The project’s challenges were further exacerbated by Covid lockdowns.
Our involvement helped the project team (lead by Willmott Dixon) to initially navigate the decision over how to approach the BREEAM. This was then followed by doing a pre-demolition audit to assess the value and potential for material retention and reuse. Then the service got into the meat of navigating the design development and contractual steps needed to address each of the environmental areas coverer by BREEAM. Ultimately a successful conclusion was achieved and a BREEAM Excellent rating was certified.
