This project is pioneering the construction of the first-ever Passivhaus school, Sutton Council’s objective was to develop a school that prioritizes sustainability by minimising operational carbon emissions while ensuring energy efficiency and a superior indoor environment for students and staff alike.
We have been entrusted by the main contractor, Willmott Dixon, to carry out the Whole Life Carbon Assessment for the project. This comprehensive assessment evaluates the total carbon footprint of the school’s lifecycle, from construction through to operation, ensuring that sustainability is embedded at every stage.
A notable feature of this project is the use of a timber-based superstructure. This strategy effectively reduces the overall embodied carbon of the building when compared to traditional construction methods that typically rely on concrete or steel. By opting for timber, a renewable resource, the project not only minimises environmental impact but also promotes the use of sustainable materials in modern construction practices.
