Filwood Broadway is a Levelling Up Funded project located in the Knowle West region of Bristol. The project aims to redevelop several existing buildings within a highly constrained context, offering commercial space directly on the high street with residential units above.
We carried out Whole Life Carbon assessments on the development ensuring that the correct approach from the start was adopted. The options were to re-build or retrofit and both considered.
By retrofitting the existing buildings there is a 5% lower overall embodied carbon impact compared to a new build. However, the assessment of whole life carbon per person is lower in a new-build option. This approach also provides greater opportunities to use eco-friendly materials and therefore was taken forward.
We then carried out Energy Statements, SBEM and SAP calculations for the project as it progressed.
