Cardiff Royal Infirmary

Cardiff Royal Infirmary has a long and distinguished history in the heart of Cardiff’s city centre. However the march of time has not necessarily been kind.

We are supporting the provision of new facilities in the building to meet changing clinical and patient needs.

The target for the project is BREEAM Excellent. However, the real challenge has been to avoid the assessment spreading into areas that it did not need to.

For instance, initially the enabling works were going to need to be covered by BREEAM. However common sense prevailed and BREEAM no longer needs to be applied to this and other works that are not readily aligned with the assessment criteria.

Instead, the focus has been on, and continues to be on, using BREEAM as a vehicle to drive sustainable standards where it is needed on the project’s redevelopment.

The project is a long way from completion, but by addressing BREEAM from the outset of the project, the strategy is deliverable, viable and practical.
