The Grade II listed CRI site is Cardiff’s most significant and historic healthcare sites, dating from the late 19th century, the infirmary was Cardiff central city hospital until decommissioned in 1996. Working with CADW, Cardiff Council’s conservation officers and C&V UHB a conservation and development plan was developed, which identified the future uses and heritage footprint of the most significant listed features and set out a 10 year plan for restoring the site to its former glory.
As part of the refurbishment, the external envelope was upgraded and restored, providing modern Low carbon environmental performances to house modern healthcare facilities. The works included, new roofs, thermal linings, new timber widows and new mechanical and electrical systems.
Our goal was to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating while avoiding unnecessary assessments in areas like enabling works, which do not align with the criteria. Instead, we are focused on using BREEAM to promote sustainability where it is truly required. By addressing these standards from the outset, we ensured that our strategy remained practical and achievable as the project progressed.
