MTVH stands for Major Trauma Vascular Hybrid Theatres. About one in 1,000 patients arriving at emergency departments will have major trauma. This was a major new redevelopment project for University Hospital Wales, funded by the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
This was a complicated project involving a mix of new build and refurbishment areas that needed tying into the existing building services.
The project also had stringent energy and sustainability targets set by NHS Wales. This included in depth energy and zero carbon targets, waste reduction targets and embodied carbon targets.
The project’s challenges were unfortunately exacerbated by multiple Covid lockdowns.
SCS’s support involved helping the project team to initially navigate the decision over how to approach the BREEAM. This was then followed by doing a pre-demolition audit to assess the value and potential for material retention and reuse.
The final stage was being involved in the design development and contractual steps needed to address each of the environmental areas covered by BREEAM.
Through successful collaboration BREEAM Excellent rating was achieved and there is a fantastic new MTVH Theatre available at the largest hospital in Wales.
